Our pilgrimage, the so-called Kora, round Mt Kailash, starts early in the morning. It is 6 am as we leave the village of Darchen. It drizzles but we not the only ones being up so early. Shortly after leaving the village we hear the soft ringing of bells in the distance. A herd of yaks is nearing from behind.

Soon after, we also meet the first Tibetan pilgrims. The trail leads along a ridge overlooking the Himalayas and a vast open plain. At an altitude of 4650 m we are making slow progress. After about an hour we reach Chaktsal Gang. From here pilgrims are able to see the mountain for the first time, pressumed a clear day.
